How the 5 Second Rule of Productivity can make a miraculous change your life.

The 5 Second Rule of Productivity

Many times when we are trying to switch our interesting tasks to productive ones we face a lot of difficulty for example:- Stop using Social Media for switching to study, stop chatting to complete pending projects, etc.

The main reason behind that is our brain always select the easier task to keep you under your limits, just to make you comfortable, just like if you want to wake up early in the morning especially in winter you will face a lot of difficulties to get out from the warm blanket just because your brain instructs you to take more rest and keep your body warm during winters to just make you feel comfortable.

But this is not good for us because due to that we are becoming lazy day by day, and also less productive due to the habit of giving priority to the easiest or meaningless tasks first, and for getting rid of this problem in this post I am about to discuss the famous 5-second rule by the well-known author Mel Robbin's.

Introduction to The 5 Second Rule!

So before starting it is essential to know that what the five-second rule exactly is? and why it is so important to know about it?

So the five-second rule was founded by the world-famous author "Mel robbins" and in his book "The Five Second Rule" they have described it amazingly.

According to this rule when we are stuck in interesting works, say chatting with friends for example, and at the same time, if we have to switch in any kind of important work which challenge our body or mind it is very difficult for us to switch tasks.

But if you count from 5 to 1 just like during a space shuttle launch and immediately leave the unimportant tasks and switch to the important ones you will easily able to switch tasks.

I knew it sound crazy but it really works, and the reason behind this is that the counting will act as a strong trigger that gives your mind an immediate push towards the challenging activity. and you will able to switch tasks.

Mel Robbins said himself on his website melrobbins.com that

"The 5 Second Rule is simple. If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it.

The moment you feel an instinct or a desire to act on a goal or a commitment, use the Rule.

When you feel yourself hesitate before doing something that you know you should do, count 5-4-3-2-1-GO and move towards action."

How the 5 Second Rule Works?

Well, the Author Mel Robbin's said that if you do one simple thing, you can prevent your mind from working against you. You can start the momentum before the barrage of thoughts and excuses hit you at full force.

In simple words, by counting from 5 to 1 and immediately switching the tasks we did not give time to our mind for thinking things like "how boring or difficult the task is or how interesting the previous task" and due to that, we can easily switch tasks because we didn't give our mind the time for thinking about obstructive thoughts which act as a barrier in switching tasks.

and, due to this we can switch our task easily and hit the important one.

The 5 Elements of the 5 Second Rule!

Well, the author has also described the 5 Elements of the 5 Second Rules that you have to take care of before applying this rule.

So let's talk about the First-

1. The moment you have an instinct

In this point Instinct is the motivation towards your aim that allows you to leave the unimportant task and hold the hand of an important one.

It can be anything like a will of studying from cracking an exam, or the will of workout for getting your dreamed posture, or even the will of waking up early in the morning to headstart your day in a more meaningful way.
All these things act as a motivation for getting some designated rewards, if you have not a designated aim or reward you can't even think about counting from 5 to 1 because it is just a meaningless effort for you.

That's why it is very important to set an aim before applying this rule.

2. To act on a goal

Well about this point author Mel Robbin's said about this point "The second element of the Rule that is critical for you to understand is that it’s not just about acting on any instinct, it’s an instinct that’s tied to a goal."

In simple words, after acting on the instinct you must have the instinct tied to your final aim like I already talk in the first point if you wanted to crack an exam then you study, which means if you have a reasonable motive then you will take action about it.

So it's important to understand the link between your goal and the triggered instinct.

3. You must push yourself

Well pushing yourself is important because sometimes going hard on ourselves helps us to switch to a challenging task.

You can understand this with this example if you have to get up early in the winters say 4 AM then as you know even counting from 5 to 1 and linking your task to your aim can become weak against the laziness of getting out from your blanket, so at that time it is very important for you to become hard on your self and push yourself out of the blanket.

That's why to be hard on yourself is also an important key for the door of applying this rule.

4. To move within 5 Seconds

According to this point, you have to not just jump up in the action but it is important to move in the direction of the instinct.

In simple words, you have to do all things in the direction of your instinct or aim, for example in studying you have to remove your distractions, assemble your equipment, etc. in short to arrange everything in the path of your goal.

So you don't have to jump into the final task, for example, studying directly all you have to jump into the preparation for example assembling equipment after the 5 Second counting.

5. Or your brain will kill it

This is the last and the most important point is to take action (switch tasks) within 5 Seconds because If you don't take action in 5 seconds your brain will get enough time for making obstructive thoughts that will stop you from switching to the challenging tasks.

Conclusion

Although as you will see in this post, that how miraculous was the method is, when we will apply it by taking care of all the five elements.

As you know that how important is to give priority to important tasks and this method will help you by taking care that your addictions to interesting tasks won't be a wall in the path of important tasks.
.All you have to do just give this rule a chance and see its miraculous effects on your life.
